5 for Sister

Hi Everyone!  Friday is here yet again.  The older I get the faster the days and weeks go by.  I am so sorry that I forgot to wish my sweet sister a happy birthday yesterday.  November 7th is her big day, and I’m so happy that I got a sister 24 years ago.  I decided to do 5 for Sister instead of 5 for Friday.

My sister and I fight.  This is true and a bummer, but the fact of the matter is I love her.  She loves me.  Despite our differences and maybe even sometimes because of our differences, we love each other.  My worst arguments have been with her and yet some of my most fun and special times have been with her too.  I will always make up and with my sister.

We are completely the same in some ways and total opposites in other.  I think we have maybe two or maybe just one letter the same on those popular personality tests.  I’m pretty sure she thinks my thoughts and actions are crazy sometimes, and I feel the same about hers on occasion.  At the same time, I admire her personality and way of doing things too.  Where I’m aggressive, she’s peaceful.  Where I’m organized, she may be looking for her phone…or her keys…or her debit card.  Where I’m come off as chilly or snobby in personality, she’s comes off (and truly is!) friendly and so personable.  Our similarities include growing up without sidewalks or neighborhood friends.  We grew up together (plus brother) with the Pondeteers (our version of a club?), walking down the lane to visit grandparents, and lots of softball plus some baseball thrown in for good measure.

Best memories I have include encouraging her to walk on a frozen pond and then having to fish her out when she fell in and smuggle dry clothes out of the house in hopes of not getting in trouble (this did not work), countless trips to Salisbury with mommy, Florida spring break trip, when she plays photographer and documents our lives, being ladies who lunch, NYC trips, and lots of phone conversations just staying in touch.

I’m so proud of how hard she works in school.  If you really want to know, I have never applied myself to school as much as she has. She is such a hard worker, and I admire her for that.

I’m jealous of my sister too.  She gets all the experience of a little one and will be a true pro by the time she has one of her own.  She is a great aunt, and I’m so glad she’s Holdie’s legal guardian.  Meaning if things go super south with the Mr. and I, you’re in charge, Dara!  No pressure.  🙂

Love you.

  1. Hi there! This is a little random, but I’m a writer for TODAY.com, the online home for NBC’s “Today” show, and I’m writing a story about how to keep the peace with your siblings during the holidays, even though you may have differing political views. You may have seen reports on the Cheney sisters’ very public fight on social media over gay marriage – that’s what inspired this story:

I’m not sure if that’s the situation with you and your sister, but you have such a nice way with words that I thought I’d reach out. Would you have some time to comment on the story today? Email me at melissa[dot]dahl[at]nbcuni[dot]com if you’re interested.

I hope to hear from you soon!
