A Home Workout and Introducing my Sous Chef

You’re hearing from a teacher with 1.5 days left of her eighth year teaching!  Can I get an AMEN!?!?  This last week is super crazy with last minutes meetings/to-do’s.  I skipped out on my morning workout today at the gym, AND I had a meeting that went later than expected followed by my participation in a slightly impromptu dance video with the other teachers at my school.  It confirmed that I’m a not-so-hot dancer, BUT I’m slightly less awkward than I was in high school.  So there.

Since I missed my workout time, Holden and I did a little at home workout.  🙂  He’s the best buddy!IMG_1863 IMG_1864 IMG_1865 IMG_1868

Getting his bridge pose on!!

Coincidentally, we also had tacos for dinner.  I pretended to put toppings on him and eat him like a taco.  We are partial to soft taco shells here.

Whoops!  Just realized I wrote “piles” instead of “pliés.”  That’s what doing too many things at one time will do!

This is the workout I did.  I mixed up a few different workouts that I found on pinterest.

I was a hot, sweaty mess afterwards.  It definitely got my heart rate up!

We whipped up some sausage, corn, cilantro, and black beans tacos for dinner.  I added some garlic powder, diced onion, salt, pepper, and {of course!} smoked paprika.  With LOTS of supervision, my sous chef was a big help!

This provided lots of opportunity for chatting, {repeating} giving directions, and restating how he needs to credit his mother for all future culinary skills.  You’re welcome, future wife.  Dude will/can cook.

I’m off to take care of lots of dishes and preparation for tomorrow.  We’ve got a movie date with this one…

Loved, loved, loved the #1!  I’m sure it won’t be as good, but Will Ferrell is my all time favorite funny guy.

Have you seen it?

Who’s your favorite funny actor?

Hippity hoppity, Easter’s on its way!

Hi there!  Gosh, there’s nothing like a Monday to take the “spring” out of your step!  5AM came mighty fast today!  I actually was sleeping so well that I didn’t hear the Mr.’s alarm go off at 4:40 today.  You could say we’re early risers…and you’d be right!  Here’s our Sunday recap…

enjoyed lots of yummy food

did an at-home workout

I’m thankful for the stopwatch on my iPhone!  How did people do intervals before this little handy dandy invention!?!?!

We also took a bath with our Easter eggs and hunted for them in bubbles.  I mean, what else would you do with a surplus supply of Easter eggs???

IMG_1172 IMG_1175

Today involved a lot of paperwork, list checking, and teacherly stuff.  H and I enjoyed a little walk-about with Roscoe the Great this afternoon.  H told me, “Mama, it’s chilly!”  Yes, {with sadness} I agreed.  We also got a nice little surprise package by our door from the Easter Bunny disguised as Poppy.  Thanks Moochie and Poppy!  Books=the best!  Especially when it’s a little monkey name George!  We also started our “Resurrection Eggs” today with the first egg.  H was thrilled to see the donkey figurine inside, and we read the page in the little book that corresponds to the first egg/blue egg.  I love that it makes almost a countdown/Advent-like calendar for Easter.

This week is shaping up to be a mighty busy one!  Three meetings in three days!  Friday will bring lots of party prep as we get ready for H’s birthday party – take 2 on Saturday.  Of course, it will rain and be chilly on his big day, but sprinkles, animal crackers, and markers are bound to make it fun right???

Here’s my workouts for the week:

Monday – walk/rest

Tuesday – 5.5 mile run outside/stretch (AM) weight routine at home (PM)

Wednesday – light yoga AM/stretch/ walk the doggie PM

Thursday – gym workout AM (15 minutes elliptical/15 min stair climber ->I may pass out at this part of the workout!/30 minutes weights)

Friday – OFF (We will be in full on shop, decorate, get food ready for the par-tay on Saturday.)

Hope you had a good Monday!  It’s all downhill from here!  😉

5 for Friday

Hi there!  Happy Almost Weekend!  I feel like I’ve been on a permanent vacation.  Schools have been open here only two days in the past two weeks!  While trying to make the best of our snowy/icy days, I’ve resorted to lots of Pinterest-ing, cooking, crafts, and {today’s plan} cleaning.

Yesterday, we woke up to more winter weather about several inches of the snow kind.  The Mr.’s offices were closed, so we got to hang out with him {major fist pump!}.  When Daddy’s home, it means the gas logs on which makes me one happy girl.  🙂

The Mr. built a killer snowman for a workout yesterday.  Holden helped decorate him with some household items including a ‘coon skin hat of the faux little boy variety.  They also went over the neighbor’s hill to sled while I stayed inside and did an at-home mainly cardio workout.

Glad I did that workout!  I definitely enjoyed two glasses of Rex Goliath cab sauv wine after dinner last night!

I also finished this book yesterday.

A little dated and somewhat centered on homeschool moms/stay-at-home moms, but I really liked it.  She made the effort to put in some applications for today’s {usually} working mom but really drove home the point of how our children need actual “homes” as a haven from their everyday lives.  I also loved how she touched on the importance of creating a home for ourselves.  Very good “big picture” message.

Love these mittens!  I have concluded after this winter blast that neither H nor I have the correct winter gear.  These mittens would be the perfect addition.  Perhaps even wear gloves underneath to layer??

Best of all, Minnesota Mittens provide opportunities for employment of people with disabilities.  Made in America!

Another Pinterest project…  H and I got supplies at Hobby Lobby, and I taped off his name {twice due to poor quality painter’s tape the first go-round}.  He picked green and blue as his colors.  We painted before breakfast yesterday…take our crafting serious around here!  Then, the Mr. ever so carefully pulled the tape off around lunch time.  The finished work is hanging on his wall.

March goals!  I’m trying to be more intentional {is that possible?} with my time and plans.  I’m for sure a planner, but do what you love, right!?!?  I did add read 2 books to this list.

I have a gift certificate that will mostly cover a massage and a hair cut at my local salon.  Why, oh why do I keep putting it off?  I am so weird!  I also have a nice gift certificate to go clothes shopping from the Mr. that I have yet to use.  Maybe I should have included that as a goal, too?  The Chrysler Museum is a local art museum that is totally free.  I really want to take Holden for maybe just a portion of it.  Recommendations that I’ve found online say to start with the ancient civilizations exhibit and then meander into a kids’ craft area.

In other snow day news, we decided to brave the elements for a ride out yesterday.  We made our way down to the oceanfront, and I took these pictures.

IMG_1066 IMG_1067 IMG_1071

Somebody couldn’t wait until we got home to get some shut eye!  Top picture is another future hotel site.

We invited our neighbors over last night for BBQ chicken sandwiches, Caesar salad, chips, sweet potato fries, and key lime bars.  Very yummy and so not our usual Thursday night fare!  See BBQ chicken recipe here from Rachel Ray.  Key lime bar recipe was courtesy of Mix and Match Mama.  I don’t typically cook the “full flavor” sugar and butter, but it was a nice treat.  I packed up {most} of the left-over bars and sent them for work treats for the Mr.’s office today.  It was so nice to have time to get together with people we see everyday but are typically “too busy” to talk with.  Love God Greatly is an online women’s Bible study group whose current study focuses on how we {human beings} were made for community and our relationships with each other.  I highly recommend any and all of their Bible studies.  They typically do about an 8 week study with a couple weeks of in between the new and the old.  Check them out!

Happy Weekend!

Home Workouts

Happy Monday morning!  Today, my mom is having surgery on her ankle to relieve some chronic pain…so, in a way, I guess it is a good morning for her.  I couldn’t imagine having my mobility affected that I couldn’t take a walk, run, or just run around like a crazy person all day on my feet.  I’m hoping (as I’m sure my family + my mom) that this surgery will bring her some relief and allow her to be more active in the future.  Plus, she’s got one busy grandson to keep up with.  I’m sure my sister, brother, and I will provide her with some more active little people in the future as well.  Sending positive thoughts and prayers to her!

Speaking of being active, I’ve been somewhat slacking on my morning gym workouts.  I went for about 30 minutes last Tuesday, but that visit was the last time I darkened the door.  On Friday, I did an at home workout by Housewife Glamour.  I would show the workout plan here, but her website is under maintenance.  I believe she is changing her blog quite a bit including the name.  Here is a link to the Pinterest image… It got my heart rate up.  I was done in 30 minutes which was coincidentally the length of Holden’s kids’ songs CD and his attention span to books/farm animals in his room.  Afterwards, I took the dog on about a 30 minute walk.  Workout=done!  And all without a gym!

Highly recommend her site as a good resource for at-home workouts.  Lots of them without equipment.  I will try to post the link to the new site when it goes live later today.  Fast forward to yesterday, Sunday.  We had amazing weather here!  I whined for a bit, got the Mr. to prod me into a run, and then ran the most I have in weeks…possibly months!  I ran 5.5 miles!  What-the-what!  The temps were just perfect.  I’ll reason it out that way.  We are expecting higher temps (in the 60’s) but rain today.  Then, the weather turns chilly again.  Wah, wah, wah!  Guess who won’t be running again for a while?!?!?!  I’m such a fair weather runner.  Let’s not pretend.  BUT…I will run in steamier conditions.  So that scores me legitimate runner points right?  After my longish run, I came home and used free weights to get some resistance training in.  I have 5, 8, 15, and 20 pound dumbbells plus a yoga mat that I use for my at-home workouts.  Can’t forget the Pandora website for music motivation.  I love listening to the “Today’s Hit” channel on there when working out.

IMG_0961 IMG_0962 IMG_0963

I store my gear in a little trunk that was a wedding present.  I like to keep it in our family room right next to H’s toys for easy access.

Do you have any home workouts that you love?  Do you incorporate free weights at all?

Make today a great Monday!

Lynyrd Skynyrd Speaks

Hi everyone!  I can’t get my mind wrapped around the fact that it is a Tuesday night instead of a Monday night.  I’m sure I’ll be confused all week after the MLK Jr. Day off.  After a somewhat false start at the trampoline place {totally sold out!}, we hit up Target for a few quick buys with my gift card.  Then, we went over to a local “bounce house” to let Holden jump for joy aka get that boy energy out!  He had a blast.  I, however, would have much rather gone to the trampoline place and got to jump around too.  I’m pretty sure the workers would have frowned on me climbing on the bounce houses.

After a little over an hour, I pulled the plug on Holden’s plan to jump ALL DAY.  We headed to the mall to do a quick return and then to Great Clips for a hair cut for H.  They are absolutely wonderful with him!  So patient!  I always tip 25% there.  We {mostly me} appreciate the kind kid treatment.

IMG_0916 IMG_0918 IMG_0920 IMG_0921 IMG_0922

What a busy but fun morning.  All this before noon!  The rest of the day kind of fizzled as H snoozed away the afternoon, and I was a bit mopey and tired myself.  I tried to read a book.  Then, I tried some other productive things.  No luck.  Oh well.

To be quite honest, I’ve had a hard time recently when I have quiet, down time.  Instead of relaxing myself or doing something active/productive, I find myself paralyzed by my thoughts.  I think on this.  I think on that.  I run that scenario with that situation and then switch to another.  EX-HAUSTING!  And so very annoying.

To be quite honest again, I sort of feel like I’m just drowning in my thoughts sometimes.  Since the fall, I can’t seem to hit the reset button.  Some things happen that trickle into your everyday and don’t let you go.  No matter how hard you desire to shake them lose.  I pray about it.  I read tips about it.  I talk with others about my feelings {eww}.  I try to do this.  I try to do that.  Today, I got the urge to go for a run.  Now, it was a relatively nice day.  However, I typically only seek out an outdoor run after a long work day if the weather is *just right.*  This is definitely true if I’m not feeling 100%.  It is oh-so-easy to talk yourself out of a run.  For whatever reason, I did it.  Left work.  Threw on running clothes.  Felt a good bit about guilt about not racing to pick up H from daycare {this is all day, every day feeling.  go me.}.  Took the dog to alleviate said guilt by validating exercise with Roscoe exercise.  Ran with no course/route in mind.  Ran at a pretty crappy pace.  Whatever.

Had the best run ever.  Why?  Clear, real peace.  Just like that.  It came on almost like a wave as I started out.  Then, {as my lovely iPod shuffled a random mix of rap, Christian music, and some Carrie Underwood for good measure} Lynyrd Skynrd’s “Simple Man” came on.  That was it.  Total clarity.  Isn’t it funny that you can think the same thoughts, write the same words in a journal, even read actual words that Jesus Christ said…until it is the right time and the right medium, it means nothing.  And in just a run, just a song…it meant everything.  Same message.  The lyrics are listed below.  Here is a link to a YouTube video if you’d like to hear it for yourself.  I listened 3x to it while I was running and each time I become more sure that that run was where I was supposed to be, that song was exactly what I was supposed to hear.

“Simple Man”

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time… Don’t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you’ll find love,
And don’t forget son,
There is someone up above.[Chorus:]
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Boy, don’t you worry.
You’ll find yourself.
Follow your heart,
And nothing else.
You can do this,
If you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man

Can this be fun?

Happy Monday!  I can happily report to have been in my PJs since 5 o’clock!  🙂  Unfortunately, I also have to report one slight sick toddler boy and one more-than-slightly sick man in this house.  Our Saturday included lots of organizing and cleaning.  I hadn’t gotten around to dealing with the old toy v. new toy situation brought about by H’s wonderful Christmas.  I also tackled a little reorganization of all H’s old clothes and toys that we are storing in an extra bedroom.  I really, really had been putting that off, and {quite honestly} I didn’t really organize it like I would like {i.e. by size}.  We also did floors, bathrooms, dusting, and several loads of laundry.  I ended the day with a garage cardio workout before we headed out to eat at Reginella’s in Virginia Beach.  The Mr. consumed the largest plate of spaghetti with meat sauce that I’ve ever seen.  Holden enjoyed some garlicky broccoli with cheese ravioli, and I had a vegetarian calzone.  I thought mine was great.  I truly haven’t had calzone since probably high school or maybe college.  The servings were ridiculously large, so H and I were able to take ours home for lunch the next day.  I can’t believe it, but the Mr. cleaned his plate.  Wow.  Here are some pictures of our Saturday…

Little tea kettle action – This thing gets a workout in the cold, winter months!

Our Christmas gift that is also keeping us warm!  I think it makes the room looks so homey.  A lot of ladies worked hard to hand-stich this “bow tie” pattern quilt.

Molasses are my favorite, but I had almond butter for more protein with my breakfast.

Apparently, you need “gobbles” to go potty.

Actually, it was a pretty good cardio workout.  Bonus!  I wasn’t that sweaty, because it was freezing in the garage on Saturday.

The cutie I sat by while I looked at another cutie across the table-

It’s hard to believe that we had such a fun time mostly cleaning and organizing on Saturday, but it’s true!  I love these weekends at home.  They are much needed after a long {to me, not the Mr. 🙂 } hunting season and the busy, travel-filled holidays.

Hope you had some fun this weekend too!

Let Me Just Rant…

Happy Almost Christmas!  I (yes, the public employee whose perk is SUPPOSED to be holiday time off) worked today and must show up tomorrow as well.  I’m so over it.  I’m a TEACHER for goodness sakes!  We are supposed to be off now and basking in the glory of winter break.  What. Is. This. Work.  On. The. 23rd!  To make matters worse, the husband and child have already departed for fun Christmas stuff.  Aka…anything is fun that does not require participation in any more Christmas “activities” or worksheets.  Seriously, scrubbing my sister’s toilet for her Xmas party would be welcome versus sitting on the boiling pot that is 3rd and 4th graders ready for a break.  That will be tomorrow’s fun.

In other news, my gym closed without significant warning BEFORE the new branch opened.  I mean, this new one is supposed to be great.  Is it open today?  No.  Therefore, it sucks.  After traveling during rush hour to southern Virginia Beach, I witnessed the hot mess of the southern branch which also was full of grunting men and blender bottles.  I like my 5 AM oldies but goodies.  I guess it is all what you get used to.  I just don’t like having my comfort zone moved!

Therefore, no workout for me.  😦  Instead, I went to the mall.  #winningidea  I did get The Aviator’s Wife and the latest copy of Women’s Health for Xmas break perusal.  I’m totally avoiding packing by planning my morning workout.  Have you ever done a Pinterest-inspired workout?

This is what I found for tomorrow…

My plan is to combine this with about 30 minutes stretching and strength.

I’m looking forward to seeing family, but I must admit that I’m not looking forward to those uncomfortable moments after overindulging at a holiday meal.  Here’s to remembering leftovers are good and a good idea!  I’m planning on making this in a Christmas tree shape for Christmas Day dinner!  Wish me luck now!

I’m *probably* going to need it!

Have a great Christmas Eve Eve!
